Week in review

Monday

There are days when I feel so excited to go to work and do my job but when my boss isn't around I just tend to be more uhmmm lenient lol sssshhhh. It's true that when the cat's away the mouse will play. Not saying my boss is strict though, more like his presence errr encourages me to appear to work hard HAHAHA. Charot.

But hey, I accomplished something today. I'm finally 70% in this Holiday Staff Assignment page I'm working on in PHP. Next step is adding data validation. I might sayyyy, this task was pretty challenging. Duh, everything dev related is challenging to a QA (in my mind: what's happening to my career???).

So I have a table with checkboxes and input fields and on submit I need to collect the values from all the rows where the checkbox is checked and run an update query. The ideal approach (at least for me) is to grab the row values on checkbox check, and attach it to the value of the checkbox. That way, upon submit I could just get one list and everything I need would be there. But thennn, I'm trying to avoid onchange functions because I think it isn't too neat and I'm reserving the method for validation where it's more apt? Errrr.

Anyway, I managed to "cheat" my way into it by processing 2 lists and matching them together. Not the most elegant approach but hey, it can't go wrong.

Another thing I accomplished today was a logo project for one of my colleagues hahahaha. After retiring from writing on the sides, I badly needed more gigs. Right now I only have 2 logos, 1 invite, and one blog post. Man I need to keep myself busy.

Here's a reject, by the way:

Tuesday

Oh this day was busy. I had 2 RPA meetings. I didn't mean to be productive today but heck you know when there's a programming logic bugging your mind and you can't stop thinking about it? It's eating up my me time --- which starts by the time my boss leaves until the end of my shift hahahaha. Charot.

Here's another reject. Oooh I like it that my collection of "Drafts that didn't make it" is growing!

Wednesday

I got up pretty early so I had enough time for coffee. Oh I love coffee mornings. Moreso the fact that the time it takes for me to finish taking a bath is enough time for my coffee to brew and cool down a bit. Now I'm looking forward to more mornings like this.

I cooked butter tikka masala and bought naan from Queens. I really really love Indian cuisine (particularly masala, lassi, and samosa) but I don't like how long the smell lingers in our kitchen, our living, on our couch, AND IN MY MOUTH haha yesss even after brushing! I even feel like I'm giving off a scent as well HAHA.

Anywayyy. We played badminton today! It's pretty much my only source of sweat this week. I need to do this regularly!

Thursday

Cooked pork giniling today and I love it! Of course I wasn't able to cut down on rice, but well, I've been off track in pursuing a no rice lifestyle for so long so I don't care anymore! Hahaha

Today we had a short town hall with our regional chiefs, and one of them mentioned about the new building we're transferring to in two years time. I'm so excited! We're moving to Ayala Triangle Tower Two, which will also house the new Mandarin Oriental Hotel. The project is being developed by Ayala Land, of course, and the gorgeous building is designed by SOM. Here's thread from Skyscrapercity.

I'm sooooo looking forward to the new building I might actually stay until we move out! Not that I have plans on leaving lol.

Friday

I AM SO BLOATEEEED!!! Super lamon ako today! My husband got me kare kare with lechon kawali this morning before going to sleep, then I ate burger, pizza, and chicken at work. Also got coffee. I'm not even done digesting and I'm already craving for moooore. I'm just so hungry nowadays. My period's probably coming up.

Updates! I changed my blog layout a biiiiit. Just rearranged and colored a few sections lol

Uhm, what else. I wrote a new entry on my other blog, Surf & Perf. If ever you're working on UIPath and is interested with RPA. Check it outttt.

Friday's 10 Happy Things // 6

1. Mornings like this

Remind me how blessed I am. I have so much to thank God for but I'm guilty of failing to revere him every time I see his work in nature. I take this view for granted a lot. It's not always that you get an unobstructed view of the sunrise. Hope it stays this way where we live!

2. Coffee like this

Never fails to condition my mind for work. Always and forever, Primo Iced Mocha! ❤ I've been wanting to take a fresh photo of this when it hasn't been mixed yet. The way the milk slowly hovers upwards as coffee is poured into the cup, I could only admire the beautiful marbling effect.

3. I finally finished this lengthy test that's been eating my days out

3 months guys. I've never ran a test this long. You could say it's pretty exhaustive, which is against the 7 Principles of Testing lol, but they wanted data from an extended coverage that could justify a desktop security upgrade. Anyway. So glad it's over, for now.

4. We got our first Paiwi payout today!

And it's even ahead of schedule, to our surprise. Last year, after selling our condo in Makati, we decided to invest some of our profits to DV Boer Farm's Goat Paiwi Program. Through them we got a slot at Sorsogon Goat Ranch, where we shelled out some ₱300k to sit for 3 years, while they give out partial ROI in 11 months interval. I have very little doubt about this investment program in general, since it's been vetted by several investors in TGFI, even Nawies lol, and there are hardly any horror stories in this DV Boer Investors Group I'm part of in Facebook. But the first payout doesn't really prove much. I really have to wait out the entire 3 years to give them my full confidence. But yeah, kudos to SGR for delivering ahead of time!

5. I opened an account at COL Financial

My husband and I decided to split our first payout between our personal pockets, our dwindling emergency funds, and of course tithes. I have no immediate need for extra cash right now, except maybe to buy a desk on the off chance I find something nice that's within 90-95cm long, but it's not really urgent. Since I'm bad at keeping extra money, it has to go somewhere safe. Like stocks right?! Hence, COL.

I'm a noob at this but everybody says to start with blue chip companies, so we'll do that and do peso cost averaging. Oooh, how fun lol.

6. I got my LTO registration hassle free, and cheaper too

Because I had a Toyota dealership do it for me. Overall it's actually cheaper. Why? Because I didn't have to waste a VL, or an SL (sinungaling leave) to go to LTO and wait maybe 2 hours. All I did was call the dealership, email my OR/CR, and deposit the computed amount to Toyota. Then I just have to wait and pick up my new OR and sticker at the dealership, which I did on a weekend

I was billed a total of ₱4,540.06, with the following breakdown:

If I had done it myself I would've spent a total of ₱2,990.06 only. But if I had to take a leave for this I should tally in at least my half-day's worth in the office too, and that's not gonna cut it. Dun tayo sa convenient haha.

7. I replaced the blog header

Actually it was an old blog header. I don't know, I just needed a change, even a slight one haha. I'm looking at another layout, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea to change to this,

What do you think? Should I go for this plain and classic serif layout? ðŸ˜Š

8. I got new guest posts!

They lowered my rate but that's fine, at least I get to be given posts more frequently. Which means my blog's DA is going to dip lower and lower urgh. It's the sudden influx of low ranking links, I know. How do you combat that?

9. Chia, honey, and lemon for weight loss

It's kinda working! My husband lost a few pounds this week even without exercising. The only thing that changed in his diet is that I feed him half a glass of blended honey, lemon, and soaked chia every afternoon when he wakes up. I do the same for myself too and I noticed that I don't feel so hungry throughout the day. Amazing!

10. Happy long weekend! ðŸ˜Š

Layout change!

I've wanted to update my layout for sooooo long but I just don't have the time recently (excuses). It's impossible for me to get a new theme because this one I have right now has been customized too much, way too much it's hard to bring all those changes to a new template. Argh.

Here's a random photo from Unsplash:

So there, after the font change (from Montserrat x Crimson Text to Playfair Display x Lora), I finally found a way to rearrange my posts. At the surface, it's really just the layout that's changed. Featured image on the left, post summary on the right. THAT'S IT. But do you know how much effort that took me and my puny brain?

First, I have to float certain elements to the left or to the right, add some margins, adjust some paddings, blah. Easy peasy, they're all just CSS.

Next, I have to set a default photo for posts that have no pictures in them (aka. my daily dramas). Otherwise the left part of the post excerpt is going to be empty. I thought I could just expand the snippet to 100% if there's no image but it looks unbalanced and ugly. And since that solution also entails some code-digging, I'd rather work on something that's tedious but pretty. That is, looking for a way to set a default thumbnail for pure text posts.

And I did. I found a solution over heeere. I had to study where to insert the code correctly, but when it worked, all that's left is polishing.

Not really.

When the code finally worked -- ok let's not insult developers. When the markup finally worked. I had to test for responsiveness. So that's another level of adjustments, mostly paddings, margins, media size behaviors. Urgh. And we're done.

And I'm happy!

There's a part in me that wants to do some refactoring but I'm afraid I'll mess something up. There's literal gibberish in my template. I have 1000+ lines of CSS, and a bunch of encrypted javascript functions I may or may not be using. I have sliders and carousels I want to remove because even though they're hidden via CSS, they're still eating up loading time. Argh. I'm a total webdesign wreck. Just kidding.

But yeah, let's leave it for later.

Happy Friday, friends!

EDIT: My archives are a mess please don't go there for now. :)

Life lately and yet another layout change

Welcome to (yet another) layout change!

Full width and left sidebar. I'm trying to get used to it, but I like it. What do you think? Should I stop with the frequent updates? I know I should lol.

If I were to backup all my previous templates, I would've collected enough to offer them ala Gooyabi, Sora, or NBT. But whatever, I'm not confident enough to take credit, moreso, provide support.

I still don't understand why I can't seem to stick with a layout for at least 3 months. Is it because I worked as a web developer? I don't know of anyone who changes themes this often. I also like to constantly update my logo. Talk about a branding nightmare.

Taco (seasoning) overload

I tried this burrito bowl recipe from Tasty and it was okay. Haha. It looked super delicious on the video, but it's only keri lang level in my kitchen. My sister loved it though. Maybe because I was the one who prepared it? You kinda get immune to the deliciousness of your own food diba haha.

Then in the afternoon my sister baked pies. They were shaped like hopiang baboy but the filling was chili con carne. Sarap! We're actually selling them, follow Pocket Pies PH on Facebook to learn more. We just started so there's not much to see on the page haha but if you can help us promote we'll bake a mean bunch for you! :D

My online portfolio is up!
I finally turned my old blog into my official online portfolio. Check out www.yanbirog.com and tell me what you think. :D

My 2nd car accident
I didn't mean to write it so fondly, but yeah. Thursday last week I was on the way to the office when I got hit by a truck. It looked like an 8 wheeler. It was turning right to East Ave. (from Elliptical road) and I was beside it. I should've stopped to let him turn but I thought it would be too late because we were too close, his curve could hit my front bumper, so I did this stupid thing of speeding up then BOOM. I was hit at the rear bumper. The car shook and I got startled. I stopped at the side to see if the damned truck stopped too, but it didn't so oh well.

For some reason I wasn't too fazed by the incident. In case the truck driver stopped, I would've known what to say in my defense and I could've saved myself repair costs too, but that didn't happen. Looking back I felt I shouldn't have given him the leeway to pause on the curve, I should've just sped up entirely. Or not cos that sounds reckless. But seriously, I wish I had accelerated faster, 'cos if I was any bit slower I could've been hit at the driver's side and that's gonna be, uhm, sadder.

My bumper got dented and part of tail lights shattered. Good thing the lights are still working, yey?

Yet another layout change

Jenen! I'm not taking credit for the design cos it was taken entirely from this theme and applied to the original backbone of this layout which is this theme. I already finished layouting my test blog but found that there are some features that I may lose out if I overwrite the existing theme with a new one, so I decided to just incorporate the features I want from the other theme. It's not a lot anyway, just the background and the single column post container which I dissed eventually.

I changed my mind, I'm not really decluttering, I'm just trying to make my widgets appear neat and organized. I hope it shows lol.

On my previous theme I was fascinated by the idea of a video header. But it's quite a task finding a free video host that wouldn't take down my file without notice, and I wouldn't invest money on a measly 15second webm file either, so I just shrugged it off, more like I got tired of looking at it lol.

Then I was browsing at blogger theme galleries for inspiration and found Padhang Theme, I was caught by the beautiful background and thought ohkaaaaay let's do that. It's a CSS miracle to be able to fix and scale a background image proportionately to a browser window (or maybe I'm just old). Digging through the codes I learned it was actually a jquery plugin called Backstretch that's responsible for the perfect background haha. I'll leave it at that but know that I'm very happy I found out about it.

Just like how I was so glad learning about Font Awesome. <3

Happy Friday you guys!

A quick revamp

Jenen! I didn't really think when I decided to change my layout design, it just sort of happened haha. I don't know why but I easily get bored with my theme, kaka-visit ko siguro LOL. Anyway, I decided to change a couple of things here and there after browsing tumblr themes and finding this: http://rainier-theme.tumblr.com/
I thought, oooooh a video header under dark translucent overlay! Let's do it! It was a simple F12 job for me (Inspect element). I copied a few lines of code, a couple of CSS properties, and voila! It's refreshing to see something moving on my header. Needless to say, I was happy and bent on finding/making my own short HD clip of something nice but it's such a hassle. I didn't want to just grab the original video too cos I may be violating some creative commons chuchu, so I just settled for a picture first. ;)

I also removed some post borders and stuff.

Hm, on second thought, a video header would be cool. I'm looking at www.abbey-sy.com for inspiration. I suddenly want to shoot my own header lol. A 15 second webm clip is only 3.9MB. TEMPTING. Whatever, what do I know about shooting stuff lol.

We'll see ;)

Blog Design: Squarespace

i'm back to documenting design changes! i used to do this whenever i update my blog design (for keepsake) but kindof dropped it because i keep on forgetting to screenshot the page before i replace it hehe. also, it allows me to talk about web design!

i'm calling it Squarespace cos it's what pushed me to change the header. hehe was playing with it earlier and thought... ooooooh that will look good on my blog! you should check it out, it's a pretty neat logo maker. :D

Original theme: Ribbon from New Blogger Themes (i'm so proud at how different it is from the original now haha)
Header logo: mocked on squarespace/logo, recreated on photoshop; scribble icon from thenounproject.com (aaah icons galore!); font used - monserrat (it's free!);

ooooh i'm loving flat mockup templates right now <3
if you notice the header background, it's a two-toned sharp gradient. i was wondering how to do something like it without resorting to an image so thank google there's actually a CSS for it! yeyy!

Why the scribble?

i really don't know, it's appealing to me. it's random and could pass as a signature too. ano raw.

How about the colors?

i have no preference whatsoever. i took the scribble's and blue text's hexes from the G+ and LinkedIn icons respectively.

What's next...

i fancied the tabber widget a lot because i used to have a really long sidebar and i wanted to compress them somehow. it provided a beautiful solution BUT an inefficient one as it gravely affected this blog's loading time. :( and look, i have four frkn tabber widgets pa and all the scripts are inline so that's pretty heavy for a blog. T__T it looks messy too, code-wise.

i'm going to clean it up one day, decide which sections i could remove... and and... yes. i should get back to work. >_<

Welcome to www.yanbirog.com!

new domain!
i finally bought my own domain! i always thought it was too expensive to get one but then it's actually very cheap naman pala! GoDaddy has an existing promo when i bought mine this week and i only paid php 824.something for 2 years subscription!

dati kasi, i thought .com websites are hosted where they bought the domain. true. and back then i wanted my blog on a .com. kaso, i was afraid i'll have to move to an entirely different blogging platform, then it'll take too much space that i had to buy the most expensive web hosting plan with unlimited storage because what if i post too much pictures and it eats up my bandwidth? SO WRONG HAHA. apparently, my posts and everything stays at blogspot naman pala! it's just being redirected to a different domain. >XD yey. haha

ang exciting. grabe. amazeballs. i've always wanted my own domain but i never really had enough reasons and resources back then. but now! thank you Lord! hahaha

this week i learned a lot of things about setting up your own domain. i see a lot of online businesses offering this type of service, and i thought it couldn't be too hard to do it myself since all i had to do was pay for the domain and set everything up, by that i mean looking into google for tutorials on how to! #easyPeasy >XD

anyway, i encountered a couple of bummers too...
1. apparently, there's a different setup when it comes to using naked domains (http://yanbirog.com without the www). somehow it feels like using the naked domain is SLOWER. that's kindof sad for me cos that's the address i want to promote. >X(

2. naturally, a new domain means new blog stats as well. no backlinks, PR, DA, PA, and all those SEO metrics i just recently learned about. AS IF naman i was ranking before no? haha echos lang yan.

i'm hopeful i'll get ranked someday! haha

a change on design perspective:

since i decided i wanted to somehow earn from this site, i had to overhaul my entire blog design to maximize ad placements without being too cluttered. i see a lot of well earning sites that aren't visually appealing and while it hurts to know that apparently, good design hardly counts where blog monetizing is involved, i still wanted my blog to reflect my OCD self at least. HAHA

content and design now hold equal weights in my scale of 'what makes a good blog'. i usually don't care about what i write cos i wanted to keep things 'personal', but it matters a lot if my site looked pretty or not. haha! or at least organized! >XD

looking back, i was all about putting my art at the front. i adored big headers displaying my drawings, graphics, and old school javascript sliders of my latest artworks and all. but now i realized they're taking too much space and page loading time that i decided to just hide them in a category and trim the header to accommodate ads. now i just have a small header, but at least i was able to affix 2 leader boards there! haha come on CTR. haha

i settled for a responsive template for one thing: MOBILE.

and look, i finally have a logo!

it's a simple monogram made from some script font i got over at dafont.com. i was supposed to draw it by hand but i thought, why bother when there are awesome fonts out there anyway! >XD haha

i'm excited to turn it into mock-up items like business cards, RESUMES, and other paraphernalia. hahaha eneveh.

hmmm...
i'm still pretty stoked about the whole thing. i couldn't even focus on work because i was so excited to setup my domain! haha thank you so much Lord for this gift! >XD hihi

hooray for a new lay!

aaaaaargh this is so frustrating! but it came out quite nice naman don't you think? HAHA did you know that i was holding all my pending blog entries (ie. church anniv, big b burgers, work rants) because i didn't want to plug with my old layout, not when i'm itching to "upgrade" to a new theme.

if you're curious about this theme, i just ripped this off somewhere (see attribution at the foot of this blog), and did my usual themeing arti-facts (read: ka-artihan). that means, changing the header image, header text, text alignments, fonts, a couple of 3rd party stuff, etc. the work is crazy. it took me hours upon hours just to get my desired, uhm, effect.

reason why i called it an upgrade is because this theme is now, *drumroll please*, RESPONSIVE! thank you, thank you google! i feel like this blog has just entered a new era! gone with static stuff! lol also, it fascinates me that i didn't have to insert jump breaks anymore because the layout came with automatic post snippets! yeheyy!

nitty-gritties because nothing is perfect:

  • still looking for ways to make the header background responsive as well. it kinda tiles horribly when you resize the screen. huhu
  • post title hover behavior is erratic! when you hover over title links, only the color should change. apparently, sometimes, it hovers to a weirdly line-spaced Arial which i find really disturbing. i think it may be because of slow loading or whatever. but i don't like it. haha
  • my AddThis social sharing buttons don't seem to be working here (so i had to retain the old addThis script that came with the layout). all the tutorials i found online seem to be outdated, AddThis has changed their code snippets to a generic script with specific js urls per account. but then i couldn't figure out where to put it. should i put it inside the head? do i just include that 2 lines in my template and all my activated tools in the AddThis dashboard will integrate automatically? beats meeeee!

for now let me just marvel on the purpleness of this domain. not my favorite color but idk. hehe

tell me what you think! :D

new lay

// heyyy got a new lay yo! kaasar. haha

as you can see, i changed my layout again... i guess i was bored with my old layout. i also believe i've used this header countless times already. haha anyway.

// losing sense

maybe it's because i haven't been reading a lot lately and i haven't been spending some really good quality time with God... i feel like my life is losing sense. arg hay. life.

ngayon pa talaga no? right when i'm sure i'll remain employed for the next 3 months hehe. ewan ko ba. i need some soul searching looool.

FEU Diliman Batch 2012 Yearbook Layout

FEU Diliman Batch 2012 Yearbook

late post! my first and proudest published work yet! published in a sense that it was printed, distributed and sold. hehe anyway, in fear that i may be violating any creative commons rights here, if in case you find any of your work/s visible in this project, please note that i inserted a general acknowledgement, on one of the last few pages of the book, to anyone who contributed to the yearbook's success. that of course my includes online sources, though not specifically broken down.

so if you see anything here that requires proper credit, the best i can do is list them here, and thank you with all my heart. i used a ton of stuff here that i wasn't able to keep track anymore: brushes, wallpapers, textures, patterns, fonts, and that sarimanok cover .... they're free online but yeah, credit is credit.

so there, drop it when you see it.

LJDynHead

featuring a dynamic header using javascript (amaloser i know, sorry)! >XD i actually prefer an image slider it's just that i can't find the right FREE source. and tips?

like a nivo slider that links to a picasa web album perhaps? resource loading is a fuss. this site is so not optimized. but i'm happy with this! i like my dynamic header. yeah yeah, love your own.

and heeey i learned about CSS link hovers using image sprites! totally kewl! >XD

FERN Chronicles Layout

Rush is ruuuuuush!

i wonder if mam knows that i'm also doing the layout for this? i'm soooo busy ignoring our thesis. >XO come defense time, i wonder if the heads are going to criticize our program knowing that our group has been too busy (following their orders) with our extracurriculars. LOL no, not blaming anyone! i'm excited for fresh mango shake and barbecue popcorn! >XD hurray for a pretty "fast" layouting. well i just copied the previous issue hahaha >XP

photoshop, we should be engaged.

LJpink

First of all, NEW LAYOUT! Still on the crappy side cos i wasn't able to fix those badass margins. nakaka-OC yung alignment HAHAHAHA and and and! the slideshow up there, it's not supposed to be like that by default. if you'd do me the honor, on the slideshow kindly click on the gear icon (that will bring you to the Settings) and check the 'Fancy Slidedow Effects' along with 'Crossfade Transitions' and 'Pan Images'. close it and yeaaahhh, that's the effect i want you guys to see by default. apparently, DeviantArt has been so conservative with their embed code, i don't know where to edit stuff like that. hahahaha

Sooooo, what's new? aside from the layout... the blog address also changed. i mean, i told you i changed my email so i also created a different blog. anyhow, the address remains YANBIROG.CO.NR so yeah. haha all my previous entries since way way back like 2004 have been imported here.

Thing is! As usual! the Search box doesn't weave through imported entries so it's kinda useless for now. hahahaha

What else, what else. hmmm
is the jump break working?
orayt. >:)

Friday, April 22, 2011

onga pala

i haven't posted a screenshot of this layout for future reference in case i change it again hehe

Friday, December 4, 2009

finally!

here's something i spent so many hours editing! well as usual, the header image took most of my time.
:hilo:hope it's cool, well i find it cool! 3 columns! and best of all, deviantArt widget!!! so i won't be making a separate blog anymore hehehe.

so... today?
is super cool! thank you Lord for this daaaaay! my crush made my day FIRST THING IN THE MORNING so my mood is all haaaappy the entire day. hahaha diba jec????!?!! he is witness to my extreme blushing when my crush waved at me from down down there while i was watching him from the third floor. WAHAHA sorry talaga mejo may kababawan talaga ako eh. i still couldn't erase the possibility that he friggin saw his name on my doodle, it makes me nervous but LOL i couldn't do anything about it now, do i? hehehe

i ate a lot this day. burgers, sisig and bananas overloaded with condensed milk (yuuummmy!!!), nothing my mom will be happy about if i told her (except for the bananas). anywaaaay, after lunch i decided to just hang out with chamel the entire afternoon as we wait for the play production at 6pm.

hahaha so we just sort of bonded (talked!) at school, on the grass, at the field! i love our field cos it's so picturesque and is perfect for bonding moments! so we talked!!! there's never a dull moment with her LOL. at the end of our conversation we both realized that he have pretty much the same idea of love and relationships. i dunno why i'm talking about it, peer pressure pare. everyone's got one, and i don't? shempre i care! but when i think of it, i'm not yet ready. fucking 19 loveless years, and i'm not ready?!??!! late bloomer much! that's what you get with watching too much anime and studying in an exclusive hs. it was only in college that i was formally introduced to the friggin marsians.

thing is... the type of relationships i see around is not something i wanna engage myself into. people almost always confuse infatuation for love and i think it's not the best way to settle down. yaaak settle down agad. i'm not experimental when it comes to this, i don't count experiences either. while we were talking i came to a point where i questioned myself why i hate ruining friendships in favor of love when in fact, it all starts there. at dahil dyan, i'm working on it. i mean, working on changing that ideology i've lived for for almost 4 years. not because i think i could get a boyfriend by changing it, but because i think it's a hindrance for God's plan for me.

haaay Lord, i'm not asking for a boyfriend cos i when i think of it, i only want a guy friend whom i can talk to about anything. he could even be gay for all i care, as long as he's smart and open minded... and fears You.

Lord, i just want a mature guy! hahaha amen.

hahaha
